Help Us Hit 2,000 Cards in September and Watch Our Communications Director Shave Her Head

Shave My Head, North Little Rock. I Dare You.

Hello! I'm Susie Kirk, I have been the Communications Director for North Little Rock Public Library System for around four years now. I have never once been more serious about a call to action than I am right now: get or update your library card this September, and I will shave my head! We'll film it and everything!

Last year my team poured our hearts into a string of silly videos for Library Card Sign Up Month, and one of them actually went a little viral. We watched the views climb and thought, this is it, this is the one that finally moves the needle. And it was genuinely one of the most fun months of my career. But when the dust settled, we landed at 1,200 new or renewed cards. Not bad. Not what we know is possible!

Because here's the thing I think about constantly in this job: a library card is one of the best deals in your wallet. No subscription, no login wall, no catch. Just a door that opens to books, movies, music, digital resources, programs for your kids, a warm building on a hot day, and a room full of strangers who might become your people. In a world where literacy rates keep slipping and everyone's counting every dollar twice, that door matters more than it ever has. I believe that with my whole chest. It is genuinely why I show up to this job every single day. So this year, I'm not just asking. I'm putting my hair on the line.

Here's how we get there together: A renewal counts, and it's easier than you'd think. Did you move? Update your address! Do you need a new PIN so you can actually get into our digital resources? That's a renewal. Two minutes, and it counts toward the goal. Don't have a card yet? This is your sign. Walk into any NLRPLS location, or sign up in your pajamas at NLRlibrary.org/card. Don't even live in North Little Rock? Doesn't matter. NLRPLS offers free non-resident cards, though selfishly, I'd love to see a lot more NLR addresses sign up!

Once you've got that card in hand, take it out on the town. Through Power of the Card, local businesses are offering deals and discounts all month long just for flashing it. Full list at NLRlibrary.org/power.

And if you want your card to come with a little extra magic, we've got a limited-time Laufey card, while supplies last. Details here.

We got to 1,200 last year almost by accident. Imagine what we can do on purpose. 2,000 cards. One month. My hair, your call. Let's make this the best story this library has told in years, and let's make sure this time, the ending is ours to write together.

Let's go, North Little Rock. I'll bring the clippers if you bring the library cards.
