We're psyched to introduce NLRPL's very first Teen Advisory Council (T.A.C.)!  The Loft, NLRPL's dedicated teen space at Laman Library, is committed to working with our community rather than for them. In that spirit, the T.A.C. opened for applications last fall and these four teens were selected to lay its foundation. Tyler (he/him), Parker (he/him), Aaliyah (she/her), and Alisia (he/she/they) have already taken up responsibilities in the Loft, including an in-depth review of Loft policies, routine organization of our collection, and program planning. Upcoming plans for the group include a diversity audit of the Loft's collection, volunteering at major library events, and helping to plan near-future community aid programs (you'll have to wait and see what we've come up with, but...

I’m one of those people who likes to have a word of the year. As I reflect on the last several years and think forward to 2024, one word stands out to me. Brave. Hiking in Arkansas initially intimidated me, but I discovered a true pleasure. Braving those elements to experience a view like no other is priceless. Traveling outside our comfort zones can be exhilarating, but first we must be brave and open the door to new ideas, places, foods, and experiences. And sometimes, we must work to be prepared to try something new. Regardless of your current circumstances, a new year and NLR Libraries offer you a place to rest, a place to be renewed, and a place to grow.  My challenge to you: be brave. In its second year, E-Stem East Village Elementary and North Little Rock Public Library System (NLRPLS) united for a thrilling annual spelling bee. The event, rooted in a shared commitment to early childhood literacy, unfolded into a captivating tale of words. Eighteen students, spanning 3rd to 6th grade, navigated a challenging 65 rounds, mastering words from the eighth-grade curriculum. The tension peaked as contestants were eliminated, leaving only the most resilient spellers. In a riveting finale, one student clinched victory, conquering words like "Mangels" and "Pipette."
